Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Kaiāwhina in this role will provide culturally responsive, holistic support to rangatahi and whānau affected by or at risk of organised crime and methamphetamine use. This role will focus on mentorship, education, mental health support, and trauma-informed care to help rangatahi and whānau make positive life choices, reconnect with their cultural identity, and access education and vocational pathways. The role is critical to the success of the ROCC Programme by ensuring effective intervention and prevention strategies that reduce the impact of organised crime in the West Coast communities.

Service Objectives:

  • Rangatahi Services: Deliver mentorship and life skills development, enhance educational and employment opportunities, and provide mental health and trauma-informed care.

  • Whānau Services: Empower whānau through trauma-informed support, cultural reconnection, and economic empowerment strategies.

  • Cultural Reconnection: Facilitate the cultural healing and reconnection of rangatahi and whānau through tikanga Māori practices, ensuring a holistic approach to well-being.

 You would need:

  • Understanding of tikanga Māori, te ao Māori, and ability to engage with iwi, marae, and whānau.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office (excel, word, power point, teams, outlook, files).

  • Experience using Adobe.

  • Flexibility (including hours of work).

  • Previous experience in community engagement, mental health support, or similar roles, particularly within kaupapa Māori contexts

  • Understanding of the implications of and commitment to the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi

    Clearance under the Vulnerable Children’s Act (2014).

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in health, social services, education, or community development

  • Trauma-Informed Care Experience: Experience working with populations affected by trauma, particularly in relation to organised crime and methamphetamine use.

  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori

  • Knowledge of Tikanga

  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • Knowledge of local Māori and mainstream communities.
